Fingerwaves (also known as water waves) and Marcel Waves were two of the most popular hair styles of the nineteen-twenties. As is obvious from the name of each hairstyle, they were methods of adding waves to straight hair. The primary difference between the two was that the Marcel Wave used heated tongs to set the wave, while finger waves relied on water or a lotion to hold the waves in position until they dried.

1920’s Dresses

Beautiful coordinated and accessorized outfits were a feature of 1920's ladies fashions. Hats, shoes, stockings, handbags, dresses and jewelry all came together in harmony to create a unique and elegant style that can only be appreciated when seen in real-life or in color illustrations. The vibrancy is lost in black and white photographs.

Womens fashions experienced dramatic changes in the early 1920's following the end of the first world war in a period often referred to as the "roaring 20's". The passing of bustles and corsets gave clothing designers much greater freedom of expression. New and colorful fabrics echoed the joy felt by a war weary population following the end of hostilities.

1920's Dresses were lighter and brighter and shorter than ever before. Fashion designers played with fabric colors, textures and patterns to create totally new styles of dress. Hemlines rose for most of the decade but dropped slightly toward the end. Shoes and stockings assumed a greater prominence now that they were more visible. Silk stockings in all the colors of the rainbow, often with patterns, were designed to match the coordinated outfits of stylish women.

1920’s Shoes

Due to the often muddy or dusty roads and sidewalks in the early 1900's, calf-high boots were commonly worn for protection against the elements. Boots and shoes were typically black, brown or white, or various combinations thereof since these colors were practical and utilitarian.

As the condition of roads and footpaths improved, and cars were used for transport, then there was less necessity for boots, and so shoes became more prominent. Beautiful and stylish shoes were developed that have evolved into the modern shoe styles we are familiar with today.

In the 1920's whether due to the shrinkage in dress lengths or to the general swing toward color for all articles, both of utility and luxury, the fact remains that footwear was offered in colors and color combinations undreamed of 25 years earlier. Shoes in blue and red and rose and pastel shades became available to match and complement any dress ensemble.

Shoes were also referred to as slippers - not to be confused with bedroom slippers. My guess is that they were referred to as slippers because they could be slipped on easily when compared to boots.

Ladies fashions of the 1920's were quite colorful although you would never guess it from the black and white photos of the period. It is only through color illustrations, rare color photos, or seeing an actual dress that we can appreciate what a colorful era this was.

Hems started off the decade at ankle level but bit by bit they crept up to knee level. After the stock market crash hems fell a little, possibly due to women choosing to wear older fashions rather than buy new in hard times, or maybe as a rebellion against forced change by fashion designers.

1920’s Hats

1920's hats for women went from one extreme to the other. They started off the decade with wide brims and finished the decade with little or none. Shorter hairstyles facilitated the introduction of close fitting cloche hats made from felt which were a characteristic of the flapper era. However wide brimmed hats never really went out of fashion, many women making their own and decorating them with ribbons, feathers and various ornaments.

Materials used in 1920's millinery include felt, straw fabrics in mohair, cellophane, horse-hair and visca, also braids in Milan, hair, pedaline, angora, and a hemp called Bedford which was an improvement over Milan hemp. In the textile fabrics, gros de Londres, taffeta, velour, and satin were used in combination with stawcloth and braid, as well as for facing, binding, and trimming body hats of leghorn, dyed Panama, and Bangkok (which looks like straw but is really palm leaf fiber). The body hats were foundations for painted designs, embroidery, and applique.

Varied and interesting hat trimmings were used, however flowers were probably the the item with the most appeal. They were used on body hats, in solid crown, facing, wreath, and garland effects to make beautiful flower-adorned straw models.

Handcraft was employed to add interest to the hats, the simplest as well as the most elaborate of embroidery designs being in vogue. Ribbon was popular for obtaining unique effects as was floss and raffia. Wide and narrow ribbon bows, trims of self-fabric, novel cords, and cut-out motifs were used to stunning effect on tailleurs.

1920’s Handbags and Purses

Colorful beaded handbags were a feature of the 1920's. No woman would consider being seen in public without her beaded handbag decorated in beautiful motifs and often matching her outfit, with a beaded coin purse to accompany it.

Many of the 1920's handbags and purses were labors of love, being handmade by the user or a close friend or relative. As such they are often considered family heirlooms and do not come onto the market very often unless in an estate sale.

Beaded handbags and purses are very collectible which means there is a steady market for them on auction sites like eBay. Collectors are regularly buying and selling as they add to or upgrade their collections. Other buyers are looking for genuine accessories to complement their 1920's costumes for plays, re-enactments, fancy dress parties etc.
