1920’s Hats

1920's hats for women went from one extreme to the other. They started off the decade with wide brims and finished the decade with little or none. Shorter hairstyles facilitated the introduction of close fitting cloche hats made from felt which were a characteristic of the flapper era. However wide brimmed hats never really went out of fashion, many women making their own and decorating them with ribbons, feathers and various ornaments.

Materials used in 1920's millinery include felt, straw fabrics in mohair, cellophane, horse-hair and visca, also braids in Milan, hair, pedaline, angora, and a hemp called Bedford which was an improvement over Milan hemp. In the textile fabrics, gros de Londres, taffeta, velour, and satin were used in combination with stawcloth and braid, as well as for facing, binding, and trimming body hats of leghorn, dyed Panama, and Bangkok (which looks like straw but is really palm leaf fiber). The body hats were foundations for painted designs, embroidery, and applique.

Varied and interesting hat trimmings were used, however flowers were probably the the item with the most appeal. They were used on body hats, in solid crown, facing, wreath, and garland effects to make beautiful flower-adorned straw models.

Handcraft was employed to add interest to the hats, the simplest as well as the most elaborate of embroidery designs being in vogue. Ribbon was popular for obtaining unique effects as was floss and raffia. Wide and narrow ribbon bows, trims of self-fabric, novel cords, and cut-out motifs were used to stunning effect on tailleurs.
